Portfolio: Oak Street Colonial

Today I am happy to share a few scenes from Fig's Oak Street Kitchen project located in the heart of Portland's Laurelhurst neighborhood.  The final product conveys a sense of history, permanence, and livable scale.  The fine craftsmanship convinces the viewer that this kitchen has always been a part of this beautiful 1923 center hall Colonial, and the careful millwork details further support the sense of longevity.

Oak Street is home to a beautiful and active family of five, with a sincere love for the meaning and connection to their space.  Our priorities were to first support their family's lifestyle then follow with aesthetics and texture.  This kitchen was created for copious amounts of cooking and baking, craft projects, origami folding, and welcoming parties.  I for one can't wait to see the patina develop on that 8 foot solid butcher block-- for which I'm sure their active 3-year-old will have no trouble helping out.

The decorative lighting and hardware were all sourced and fabricated only a few miles from the site.  While we were mindful with material choices, I do believe the most sustainable feature of this design lies in it's longevity.  There is nothing more sustainable that a space that never needs to be torn down or remodeled again.

This project was a pleasure to complete and particularly special to me as I gained new friends as a result of the design process.  I predict many fun-filled evenings around the massive kitchen island and an unlimited supply of family time.  We are happy to be helping our client furnish their Sunriver home in the near future.  Stay tuned for more.

Custom Media Solution

My morning began with coordinating the installation of a storage piece Fig Studio designed for our West Haven clients.  Not only is the piece itself beautiful, but it really does wonders for the room it inhabits.  Their dark media wall instantly became lighter, sleeker, and a more sophisticated space for all of those necessary but unsightly media components.  The client's previous storage solution is an absolutely beautiful example of mid-century furniture, but it did not fit the look and feel of the new room Fig is busy creating for their family or the client's desire to move away from mid-century influence.

 It was my first experience working with Kai Fuhrmann of Master Furniture Makers in Portland.  He'd previously built a few pieces for my client's dining space and the finished products really did speak for themselves--  fine craftsmanship, absolute stability, and precise connection.

 Fig collaborates with a number of craftspeople in the Portland area-  from custom upholstery design, casework, tables...you name it.  When we design a piece, we take our drawings to the best person for the job and finely tune each detail until it's time to build.  We often find that a custom solution is the most detailed, affordable, and time conscious solution for our projects.  Check out some of our previous custom work here.

Sisters Coffee- The Pearl

We had the pleasure of coordinating and supervising the final installation for Sisters Coffee yesterday evening: a 9 by 16 foot map of the Oregon Territory, complete with a couple of very special Where's Waldo elements.  Graphic design expertise compliments of Meagan Geer Designs (the very talented lady who also designed Fig Studio's new logo).  High style, high impact!

I have a lot of great things to share with you all, but alas, no time to do it.  In addition to all the great projects going on right now, I'm in the process of moving and getting ready for a wedding anniversary road trip.  Not enough hours in the day, and not enough coffee in the pot!

BESPOKE: For You, For Me

One of the little luxuries we love here at Fig is the opportunity to get our hands on some great castoffs from past projects or contractor archives.  We recently acquired a great piece of polished Carrera marble (our favorite for vanity tops) and knew it was perfectly suited as a base point for a dining table.  We developed a design that melds simplicity, function, and grace while letting the materiality inform the shapes and scale with which we designed.  We call this piece PLATE.  You can see more photos over at our Facebook Album.

On the Boards: Sisters Coffee Company

This project has been a secret for so long that I forgot to share the news with you all until now!  Fig Studio completed the design for Sisters Coffee Company's second location way back in September.  We're now under construction in the Pearl District- next time you stroll past the Wyatt @ 12th and Marshall, take a peek at the progress. You'll soon have a place to call home when you visit their Pearl location.  We've stayed true to the rustic aesthetic and the brand you've come to know and love in Sisters.  Enjoy your pour-over cup near the fireplace or up in the mezzanine, stocked with books and periodicals.

We are so happy to have this family-run business join our neighborhood.  It is truly the best cup of coffee you'll find:  small batch, mountain-roasted in Sisters, OR by master roaster Winfield Durham.  Welcome to Portland!

On the Boards: Laurelhurst Living Room

Fig Studio was tasked to create a functional, stylish, and simple living environment for a young family living in a turn-of-the-century Craftsman in Portland's Laurelhurst neighborhood.  The space serves as a graceful welcome to the house and occasionally supports parties and family gatherings.  Highly durable materials and low-maintenance finishes are key in this space, as dogs and children regularly play in the room.

1.  Supportive yet relaxed sofa is enhanced with beautifully tufted details
2.  A pair of sophisticated yet affordable upholstered ottomans provide flexibility
3.  Beautifully detailed and well-scaled side chairs are detailed with antique nailheads
4.  Who doesn't need a whale pillow?
5.  Flor tiles are a must in this dog-loving home
6.  Kazu root provides instant texture.  Sourced here.
7.  Mirrors flank the existing fireplace to provide a second and third light-source.

We are lucky enough to have an adjacent sunroom on this project.  The perfect place to collect plants, create a small seating area, and allow the owners to relax on sunny days.
