If trip planning is an addiction, consider me off the wagon. I'm one of those people that loves to have something big to look forward to. Dinner parties in the backyard, a road trip to the beach, planning a Yurt adventure with friends (this weekend!) all fall under my definition of big. I am so happy to add one more exciting excursion to my list: Marrakesh. Yes, my lifelong dream is going to be realized this coming April, after the Milan Furniture Fair. I imagine myself winding through the Souk with nothing but a camera in my hand and silver tea sets on my mind.

Marrakesh is probably the most exotic location I've ever had to plan for, so choosing a comfortable and safe place to stay is top priority. Thanks to trusty Trip Advisor (don't steer me wrong now!) and style authority Remodelista, I discovered Riad Dixneuf and booked a room right away. I sought out this traditional accommodation as an alternative to traditional Western-style hotels and guest suites in the hopes that I would fully immerse myself into the Moroccan culture and better experience all that Marrakesh has to offer.

Riad Dixneuf is located in the heart of the Medina, the old quarter, and within a short walk to Djamaa El-f'na Square. I've learned through extensive research that as a first time visitor, it is critical to reserve a place of peace and refuge. The Medina can be overwhelming to say the least, and a quiet retreat is essential to center yourself after a long day of winding through the city and dodging motorbikes. Rome it is not. Riad Dixneuf's design is exactly that: peaceful, calm, and simple. It seems very organic, and calmly authentic. I viewed other accommodations that definitely reflected Moroccan sensibilities, but were overwhelmingly decorated with a clear emphasis on color. There is something so great about a white wall, and Riad Dixneuf knows exactly how to use it.

The central courtyard is surrounded by a mix of shared spaces and guest rooms. I'm particularly attracted to their cozy library and lounge space, which seems perfectly suited to sipping mint tea. Again, not shrouded in every Moroccan texture available in the Souk, but a perfect mix of organic and well- combined materials that definitely reflect my goal of finding a peaceful retreat.

I'll be happy to report my findings upon my return- until then, I'll be reading the Marrakesh archives over at Beers and Beans and practicing the art of the bargaining at my local thrift shop- they'll lower my price for the promise of a stick of gum, right?

On the Boards: BLOCK 90

Fig Studio has been blessed with a full-load of great projects to kick off 2012. I decided it would be fun to do an "on the boards" series highlighting the beginning phases of each project and let you know what we're up to here in our corner of the world. We anticipate growth and many changes this year so look out for news here and on our portfolio site.

I'm kicking off the series with our Block 90 condo project. Fig's clients and their two adorable Dachshunds are fairly recent transplants from Kansas and found their way to the bustling Pearl District about a year ago. Their unit was formerly on show for the 2009 Street of Dreams showcase (the first and only year the show went urban) and is situated at the Penthouse level of the Block 90 development. The building's architects, Vallaster Corl, emphasized the connection between indoor and outdoor space, access to large terraces, and preserving the urban view. Once an industrial warehouse, Block 90 now wears a mixed-use hat with residential space, the Aveda Institute, restaurant space, retail and office space all under one roof.

For my part, I am helping my clients make connections to the surrounding architecture, create functional layouts, specify long-term furnishings solutions, and design custom millwork and cabinetry. I always say the most sustainable decisions are the ones you only make once-- committing to a dining table that will gracefully outlive all of us is more green than just looking for the type of finish applied to the wood. We are starting with a blank slate, with just the floorplan and a growing art collection to guide us. The design is leaning toward a spare plan with contemporary lines. A few injections of artistic accent in the lighting and custom upholstery design give the space balance. We are lucky to be working such great Portland vendors for this project- Hive, Inform Interiors, and Kai Fuhrmann to name a few. Through a Lens and Milano

Travel photography is like a baby cheetah. At first the collection is so cute and cuddly you can never imagine it would do you harm, and then the animal grows (and grows) so quickly it become dangerously close to disaster. I often find that I take so many photographs so quickly that I never really have a chance to go back and weed out my favorites and discard the blurred, cutoff, or unflattering images from my trips. When I travel, I often capture moments I'll never experience again, moments so fleeting that it's tough to hit "delete" even on what would be categorized as a poor photograph.

A while back, an opportunity came along to enter an architectural photography competition. Knowing that the majority of my travel photos end up focusing on architectural subjects, I decided to go back in my archives to search for a few potential candidates. It allowed me to actually spend a little time processing each photo to it's greatest potential. To my surprise, I learned today that one of my images was selected as an honorable mention, alongside a group of talented professional architectural photographers. "What a feat!" I thought, and now the world will know I used a dinky Cannon Elph to capture this image. Take that expensive camera on my wishlist for the past three years! It's not the paint, it's the artist, etc., etc....

With that said, this is the perfect opportunity to officially announce to my readers that Fig Studio is traveling to the Salone Del Mobile 2012 (AKA, the Milan Furniture fair) this April to experience what can be labeled as Ground Zero for contemporary design. Each year, the fair showcases the best (and sometimes worst) in the world of interiors. My job is to look, listen, and document with scrutiny. I'll bring back an enormous wealth of information to share with my clients and integrate into my work the rest of the year. I had the pleasure of attending both Dwell on Design and IDS West in 2011-- what a great way to recharge my design batteries and amass inspiration for my clients.

Beyond Milan, my husband and I have plans to extend the trip to both Marrakech and Barcelona, two places I've been lusting after for years. I can't wait to wind through the Medina and witness Gaudi first hand. I'm pinning my travel to-do list like crazy over on Pinterest. See you there?

Inform Interiors was kind enough to host Hope and I for the weekend and we had the pleasure of attending several intimate events over our three days in BC. Although I've found it nearly impossible to rank my favorite, I'd have to say that our time with Omer Arbel and touring the Bocci office and production facilities was the most inspirational and mind shifting in terms of shaping Fig Studio for future success. As many of you may know I never set out to be an entrepreneur or business owner. I just wanted to design my heart out and work my creative muscles until I became old and gray, still creating from my rocking chair on a porch somewhere. What I learned during my short time with Omer, is that design is inherently entrepreneurial and that there is no reason to fight the business side of your creative endeavors. Approach ideas with openness and see where they take you. You don't have to take traditional routes in Interior Design or what your professional practice publications tell you. Why not play with materials, shapes, and construction and decide it's function later?

I'm lucky enough to have recently specified Bocci's 14 Series pendant fixtures on a current project on the Columbia Gorge in White Salmon, Washington. When grouped, the ethereal quality of these lights allows volumes of space to be turned into an artistic focus. The above right photo demonstrates a few different combinations of the 14 series while the photo at the top of this post takes the concept a few steps further and envelopes a 5-story stairwell at the Bocci offices.

Bocci's creative process and Omer Arbel's design philosophy really got me thinking about the path Fig Studio will take in the future. How can we turn our love for good design into an accessible product for our clients and collaborators. How do we weave our tapestry of ideas? Fig is still an infant, and we have the chance to really shape where we go and what we become. I'm so grateful to have the opportunity to meet visionaries like Omer, Brent Comber, and Ross Lovegrove at events like IDS West. My goal for the next year is to seek out as much information as I can, continue to experiment with new ideas, and allow myself the freedom to try.

Oh yeah, specifying amazing light fixtures is pretty cool. I think I'll do some of that too.

IDS West + Vancouver BC

I'm recovering from a near-perfect long weekend in Vancouver BC, which included a recharging trip to IDS West trade show and auxiliary events hosted by Inform. My friend and fellow interior designer Hope Telford and I met the whirlwind trip head-on and enjoyed nearly every second of our time in chilly BC. We spent a fair amount of time exploring product booths in the Convention Center and we definitely spent some time drooling over design details in the building itself. The multi-layered end-grain wall paneling somehow seemed quintessentially Vancouver. The structure was built during preparations for the 2010 Winter Olympics and has lived on as a beautiful resource for this growing city.

Trade shows are the perfect opportunity to recharge your design batteries, hone your editing skills, and meet new and interesting products in the world of interiors. With Dwell on Design last Spring, IDS West, and my upcoming trip to the Milan Furniture fair, I'm focused on what's new and fresh in my industry and can pass these ideas on to my clients. Knowing how to distill all of what we see into our design library and knowing what to toss aside is a great exercise in editing. Let's face it, not all trends are worth following and may not be the right fit for every client. Good designers know where to direct their focus and know what to leave back at the show. I'll be sharing my favorite finds from IDS this week and may throw in a few from Dwell on Design last Spring. Until then- Fig.

Custom Media Solution

My morning began with coordinating the installation of a storage piece Fig Studio designed for our West Haven clients. Not only is the piece itself beautiful, but it really does wonders for the room it inhabits. Their dark media wall instantly became lighter, sleeker, and a more sophisticated space for all of those necessary but unsightly media components. The client's previous storage solution is an absolutely beautiful example of mid-century furniture, but it did not fit the look and feel of the new room Fig is busy creating for their family or the client's desire to move away from mid-century influence.

It was my first experience working with Kai Fuhrmann of Master Furniture Makers in Portland. He'd previously built a few pieces for my client's dining space and the finished products really did speak for themselves-- fine craftsmanship, absolute stability, and precise connection.

Fig collaborates with a number of craftspeople in the Portland area- from custom upholstery design, casework, tables...you name it. When we design a piece, we take our drawings to the best person for the job and finely tune each detail until it's time to build. We often find that a custom solution is the most detailed, affordable, and time conscious solution for our projects. Check out some of our previous custom work here.

Exploring Portland's Bitar Mansion

If the iconic peacock entry motif doesn't impress you, I don't know what will. I recently had the pleasure of touring the 12,000 sq. ft. Bitar Mansion with Giulietti/Schouten Architects on sunny afternoon in SE Portland. The mansion is up for sale and is in desperate need of some care. This place rivals (if not surpasses) the Pittock Mansion in the West Hills and really deserves to be purchased by someone who can appreciate the architecture and original details of this historical register-worthy gem.

The listing agent, Tommy Jedrzejczyk, gave us an incredibly detailed tour of each beautiful room. Thoughtful details such as hidden operable window screens, secret storage nooks, and custom plasterwork are found throughout the home. Beautifully patterned floors are solid and in nearly perfect condition-- I don't think I heard a squeak from a single board.

My favorite room in the home had to be the solarium with center-situated fountain. I could imagine sipping the day away in a luxurious chaise lounge and tending to my plants in style.

Though the custom bathroom tile isn't necessarily my taste, I can't deny it's impressive color. Check out that pink (original) throne and custom-glazed men's shaving sink.

This home definitely had it's moment in the sun, and now it's time for someone to breath new life into the property. The sad reality is that there is no longer a functional kitchen, the landscaping is all but destroyed, the basement-level ballroom and speakeasy bar needs total restoration, and the exterior needs some extra TLC. However, listed at $1.6 it's a steal for anyone who appreciates this level of historical detail. Elenore Roosevelt, concert pianist Van Cliburn, and a laundry list of Portland celebrities have all been guests on the property--- who will you invite for tea?

Dave Giulietti and his team have some excellent ideas for restoring the property to it's proper splendor. With a little heart, this property could once again be the jewel of Laurelhurst.

Out and About: Rolling Huts

Continuing our tradition of surprise travel, Jeff and I celebrated our second wedding anniversary a few weekends back in the beautiful Methow (met-how) Valley, Washington. After running myself ragged trying to work full-time, move from our condo to a little cottage in Portland's Sabin neighborhood, and take on a few DIY projects, I managed to catch a nasty bug right before we left town. If you remember last years epic anniversary trip to a rural fire lookout, you might recall that I was struck with food poisoning just before departure. Here's to a healthy July 2012.

Jeff and I made a pact to alternate planning a surprise celebratory trip each July. Last year's fire lookout + Crater Lake Lodge combo was tough to beat, but I think I managed to pull off a grand surprise. We're both architecture geeks (and Jeff is just one test away from being awarded official Architect status!) so I decided to make our trip both design and adventure friendly. Sunset Magazine had an integral hand in my scheme, enticing me with their December 2010 feature on peaceful winter getaways. I knew the Rolling Huts would make for the perfect surprise trip, even during the summer months.

A night in the Rolling Huts is like upscale camping, complete with a Danish-designed woodburning fireplace and an epic view, both night and day. I don't think I've seen so many stars in my life. We lucked out with incredible weather, friendly hut neighbors, and many wildlife sightings. We spent a lot of time wandering, hanging at Twisp's natural market, eating Cinnamon Twips, and even managed an 18 mile (what seemed ALL uphill) mountain bike ride.

We really couldn't have asked for a better weekend (with the exception of the super cough I developed) and would recommend the trip to anyone interested in getting away for a few days. If you go, be sure to grab a meal at the Wesola Polana Diner adjacent to the huts. Their tapas can't be beat. It's true, we had tapas while camping and didn't feel the least bit guilty.

We had the pleasure of coordinating and supervising the final installation for Sisters Coffee yesterday evening: a 9 by 16 foot map of the Oregon Territory, complete with a couple of very special Where's Waldo elements. Graphic design expertise compliments of Meagan Geer Designs (the very talented lady who also designed Fig Studio's new logo). High style, high impact!

I have a lot of great things to share with you all, but alas, no time to do it. In addition to all the great projects going on right now, I'm in the process of moving and getting ready for a wedding anniversary road trip. Not enough hours in the day, and not enough coffee in the pot!

L.A. Bound

I'm headed down to L.A. this afternoon to partake in all the Dwell on Design festivities with my friend Casey. We may not be able to rent a car quite this cool, or wear chinos quite that colorful (you can bet I am going to try that hot Jughead Jones-style hem detail this summer) but we'll be soaking in all that LA's design scene and sun has to offer. We are planning on getting to know the Silverlake neighborhood and tour some incredible homes in the area- crossing our fingers that they allow interior photos.

Illuminate Color: The Life Aquatic

Access to a good waterproof camera is priceless when you're swimming above underwater landscapes like the ones in Hawaii. I was able to capture the bright, vivid colors unique to the Islands with ease. Traveling gives us the unique opportunity to retrieve and archive inspiration from sights normally reserved for pages in a magazine.

Dwell on Design 2011: tickets are purchased and the excitement builds. My friend Casey and I are headed to LA at the end of June to seek inspiration, see what's new in Dwell's design world, and tour a few fabulously modern homes. If that isn't enough, we have the chance to see and possibly participate in SASAKI'S Heartbeat drawing; a live art installation benefiting Japan's relief efforts.

FIG. STUDIO Happenings

PHOTO BY FIG - Travel Tip: an underwater camera in Hawaii is priceless!

Turtle sightings, sandy toes, and Plumerias were just a few elements that made my Maui trip both restful and exhilarating. I spent plenty of time absorbing the sun, reading Bossypants, and perfecting my standup paddleboard technique. I am thankful to have had the opportunity to travel, and even more thankful that Fig is starting out the month of May with a few new projects on the boards: Furnishing a high-rise Pearl apartment for a young Seattleite turned Portlander, designing a mid-century inspired entertainment room in Portland's Montclair neighborhood, and helping a young couple adjust their home's surroundings to accommodate their growing family.

Next to design, travel is my most prized passion in life. Everytime I explore a new place, swim with some creature of the deep, or taste a local specialty, I gather infinite inspiration for my life and work back home. The photo above is the perfect example of how to find color inspiration in everyday life or in a once in a lifetime opportunity. Textures, flavors, colors, patterns. It's all there.

Out and About: Vacation

Fig's taking a break this week for a family vacation to Maui, Hawaii. Though I've been to the Island several times, I did brush up on my Maui research through the Design Sponge Maui Guide, Trip Advisor, and friends and family. We're looking forward to a week of relaxation and sun, something Portland's seriously been lacking lately. I am beyond excited to get the chance to rent an SUP for the week and really see the Pacific from a new perspective. Aloha!

Rejuvenation's Blue Pointe Fixture: just another reason we're lucky to live in Portland. I'm prepping to go fixture shopping this morning and in my research the Blue Pointe stuck out as the most creative reproduction of a classic fixture on the market. Although pendant fixtures over a center kitchen island are simple and expected, why not take a small leap over to a canopy-like structure and really own that air space?

If you haven't stopped by Rejuvenation's Grand Ave. location lately, you're in for a treat. They've curated a beautiful mix of home accessories and furnishings perfectly suited to match their fixture and hardware collection. You can pickup a cup of coffee or tea at Daily Cafe's adjacent location and browse to your heart's content.

BESPOKE: For You, For Me

One of the little luxuries we love here at Fig is the opportunity to get our hands on some great castoffs from past projects or contractor archives. We recently acquired a great piece of polished Carrera marble (our favorite for vanity tops) and knew it was perfectly suited as a base point for a dining table. We developed a design that melds simplicity, function, and grace while letting the materiality inform the shapes and scale with which we designed. We call this piece PLATE. The Clock Radio Conundrum

They're highly functional, yet highly unsightly: the ubiquitous clock radio. My husband and I have been looking for a beautiful yet functional solution to our multiple alarm needs for as long as we've lived together. I've been waking up to the "ocean sounds" function on my digital eyesore for over ten years, but over the weekend I had to accept the fact that my ocean sounds now more closely replicate a failing robot. Our doh! moment hit us when we realized our iphones would make for the perfect replacements. I know what you're thinking, but it just didn't occur to us until now. Plus should I really have my work phone next to my sleeping quarters? I decided it was the best and most compact solution, but it is important to me to have our gadgets thoughtfully displayed to avoid the classic cord tangle next to my pillow. I've landed on the perfect find for our space: the book dock from Inbook. It's simple, classic, and beautiful. Now to decide if I'm more of a To Kill a Mockingbird or Homer's Odyssey.

Thinking of Spring

Thurman Street is starting to brighten up with it's yearly show of pink blooms, it's sunny one minute and hailing the next, and farmers markets are beginning to pop up around town. This all means Spring really is on it's way and I'm waiting patiently for summer to soon follow. While scouring through my food album in iphoto (yes, I do take pictures of my food on a regular basis) I came across the fresh blueberry puffed pancake I made at the end of summer '10 with handpicked Sauvie Island fruit. Berry picking is one of my favorite Summer activities and I can't wait to head down the St. Helens Highway in a few short months to get another year's supply. Who's coming with me?

Wine Club: Spain

Architects and designers tend to magnetically attach themselves to each other, talk about architecture, the latest Brian Libby post, and how CAD crashed on them at least twice last week. It's true. It's like a social security blanket for most of us. But when one of my architecture buddies suggested we start a wine club, I thought would it really work? Would we be swishing Cabernet and spitting out Corbu? With Sebastien and Hope at the helm, our first meeting was truly all about wine. Not a cad layer in sight.

I won't pretend to be an expert in this arena. I've ventured to plenty of NW tasting rooms- swished a few glasses, and declared my allegiance to many Pinot Noirs. Truthfully, I didn't really know what I was doing. Our first wine club meeting taught me the art of the taste, how to focus on the wine, and what elements help create it's distinct character. We focused on Spanish wines, moving from Cavas to rich reds. Sebastien is our resident expert, and detailed our evening on his blog, Downcellar. Hello friends. I'm writing to you surrounded by Fig's newly refreshed brand thoughtfully created by Meagan Geer Designs. I can't tell you how happy and lucky I am to have worked with Meagan and to have established a more concrete branding structure for Fig Studio- a structure we'll be using for years to come. I've been fortunate enough to be able to continually invest in the studio and see it grow with every passing day. Thank you for supporting me on this journey as Fig continues to evolve and adapt.

What I've loved best about starting Fig Studio is my ability to showcase and establish my personal style, experiment with color/texture/balance, and design all aspects of the business...right down to the notebooks I use. I do, however, know my limits and my d.i.y. attempts at graphics and branding just weren't cutting it. Just like that moment you realized you needed to call me instead of taking on that kitchen remodel yourself. I admired Meagan's sense of style and knew she would guide my brand to the place I was trying to take it over the past two years: Clean, simple, meaningful, and indicative of where the name Fig originated. In phase two of my work with Meagan, we are going to dive deeper into Fig's origins and carefully illustrate the meaning of the name. You'll be surprised to learn it has nothing to do with fruit, and everything to do with design. Until then, keep up with the studio here on Fig Notes, where I'll be sharing all of the going's on here in my NW Portland office.

Let's Eat: New Scandinavian Cooking

Confession: Preparing a multi-course meal on the back of a riverboat in chilly Norway sounds more appealing to me than dining at a five-star restaurant. New Scandinavian Cooking is my newfound kindred spirit, and I'm excited to learn all it has to offer. Clearly cooking has become my idea of fun, not a chore to check off of my list...yes, mom, I can now do more than heat up a Hot Pocket.

Tina Nordstrom is my favorite chef on the show. Her enthusiasm for Dill Weed and Crayfish is infectious and she always gives such practical and interesting advice. She'll setup this incredible outdoor kitchen in a few minutes time and prepare a gorgeous spread of Scandinavian treats. No lingonberry sauce or meatballs here-- it's all very creative and respectful of all Scan traditions while pushing forward with new ideas.

Fig Studio was tasked to create a functional, stylish, and simple living environment for a young family living in a turn-of-the-century Craftsman in Portland's Laurelhurst neighborhood. The space serves as a graceful welcome to the house and occasionally supports parties and family gatherings. Highly durable materials and low-maintenance finishes are key in this space, as dogs and children regularly play in the room.

After a stop at Portland Powder Coating to pick out the perfect shade of white for a custom marble and steel dining table, I detoured to the nearby warehouse location of The Good Mod. Well curated and laid out, the 7,000 sq.ft. showroom has a striking collection of unusual seating, case goods, and decorative accessories. A friendly staff member greeted me and gave me a primer on a pair of first-edition Eames fiberglass chairs, which sadly had to leave in the showroom. As I continued to catch up on my Joinery reading, I was pleasantly surprised to see photos of our family's petite rocking chair getting all spruced up. As oral history accounts, it was made by my Great-Grandfather, used by my Grandfather, Aunt, Cousin, Mother, and me. The chair is over a Century old and Jeff and I look forward to making it part of our household when we have kids. Of course, it is made to be used by very small children and is decidedly delicate because of it's age. When I was about 5, I decided I needed to squeeze into it one last time....you can guess the rest.

It sat in my mom's garage for well over 20 years, slowly and painfully aging in various stages of freeze, thaw, and blistering heat. You can imagine it's condition when I brought it's shattered remains to the Joinery for help. I wanted to give my mom a special present for Christmas this year, and I knew this would be well received. The Joinery took extra special care of our family heirloom and fixed it up to it's rightful condition. It still has many scratches and dings but that's what makes it ours. Every blemish tells a story and we're looking forward to adding quite a few more with our children.

Glimpse & Gander: Multnomah Falls In Winter

My first entry in my new journal recorded a short trip to the Gorge on New Year's Day. My husband and I were not feeling so hot for the last few days and really needed something to help rejuvenate our bodies and spirits. Our go-to spot for revitalization is the Bonneville Spa in Stevenson, WA. For $35 you get your own private claw-foot tub, complete with a carafe of mineral water from the source and some grapes to ease the not-so-wonderful-but-oh-so-good-for-you mineral taste. 30 mins in the super hot mineral soak, then 30 mins in a super tight wrap in the relaxation room leaves you with little on your mind and a brand new outlook for the day.

Our usual Gorge outings pass Multnomah Falls with little thought, but on this day we knew we were in for a special treat only seen during an extended cold spell. Layers of crisp white ice outlined the water's path and and the lagoon-colored pool at the base- a magical sight to behold and not to be missed.

True, a blog is technically a journal, but when you blog for your business a lot of things you wish you could write about go unsaid. Enter Le Pen and Le Paper. I started jotting down a few short notes at the end of each day in my new 5-year diary, gifted by the wonderful guys over at Canoe. Anything goes when you are writing for yourself, so when that pesky condo neighbor wakes you up at 3am, you can put it down on paper and let it go. Affirmations are also the perfect way to close the day and put your rambling mind to rest.

Make It: Heirloom Wool Tree Skirt

My friend Andrea over at the wildly popular Andrea Currie Crafts (go Andrea!) asked me to put together a little tutorial on my home made tree skirt. I'm happy to share how I got started and what you can do to personalize the skirt for your home.

The first step is to find a fabric that fits within both your home's standard decor and your seasonal decor. I'm a big fan of white on white, and I appreciate it's modern suggestion of snowfall. I chose a beautiful Melton Wool from my local fabric shop. Wool is a super fabric that can withstand quite a bit of abuse. Spill some tree water? No problem, it will likely ball up on the surface for easy cleanup.
I also picked up some beautiful silver sequins and clear glass seed beads to embellish my skirt's border.

Tools & Ingredients....and Sparkles

2 yards of fabric (Your skirt will be between 55" and 60" in diameter)

good fabric scissors

pencil

something round (I used an almost empty roll of tape)

needle

thread to match your fabric

sequins

seed beads

The dreaded circle. It's nearly impossible to cut a perfect circle at home without a special machine. My trick? A piece of curling ribbon and a sharp pencil. Determine the diameter of your skirt by measuring the overall width of your fabric (not the amount you had cut, but the predetermined width on the bolt or roll.) Mine maxed out at 56". Tie the ribbon around your pencil with a long tail. Mark that tail from the point it leaves the pencil to the halfway point on your fabric. Mine was 28". Hold the point in the center of your fabric, hold the pencil at 90 degrees, and begin to draw your circle. Make sure you draw on the back side of your fabric if it has one, this way you are sure to avoid any trace of pencil after you make your cut. You'll draw a full 360 degrees and have a finished circle. Now, find the center of your fabric again, and estimate 3"-4" on the tail of your pencil and you'll draw a 6"-8" circle in the center of your fabric. This will accommodate your tree stand.

Just like you learned in Mrs. Rodger's class, don't cut outside the lines on this project. Use your sharp fabric scissors and cut precisely on the lines you've just drawn. You'll also need to cut a slit from the perimeter of the skirt to the center circle. I eyeballed this, but feel free to draw a straight line if you don't trust your driving skills.

Now the fun part. To embellish my skirt, I traced the inside of a partially used roll of tape onto the backside of my remaining fabric. You can use whatever template you'd like, but I'm really loving the result of the simple circle. I could have geeked out and drawn this in AutoCAD, but I didn't. I have no idea how many I cut, so you'll have to estimate. Be sure to lay them out as you go to be sure you don't do more work than you have to!

I then sewed a small silver sequin to each circle while watching a GLEE marathon, thanks to Netflix. It can be kind of mind numbing so having some music or a favorite show entertaining you in the background is key. Again, be sure to lay this out before you take the final step. Once you are sure you have the correct amount of circles, pull out your all purpose tacky glue and go to town. The edge of the skirt should cut the small circle in half. This way you get that beautiful scalloped edge detail.

I'll never be able to do those sequins justice in a photograph, but trust me, this skirt comes alive when you turn those tree lights on. It's a beautiful piece that I'll probably add more detail to next year. The biggest tip I can share here is to use tacky glue for the final application. This way, if your skirt happens to get stained or torn, you can easily remove the embellishments and use them on a new base.

Frozen in Time: Coolest 4th Grade Art Class Ever

Yesterday I stopped by the Springbox Gallery in the NW Industrial district to check out a one-day-only showcase of Tracie Broughton's work with Mr. O's 4th grade class at Chapman Elementary. Tracie leads in-class art lessons at Chapman, and I'm hoping she'll expand her work and we'll see her at other schools soon. We all know art and exercise are the first programs to be dismissed when school budgets are tight!

The students wrapped their classmates in saran wrap, one limb at a time, then followed with a layer of clear packing tape. Once removed from the body, the students assembled the pieces to create freestanding sculpture.

The sculptures are being auctioned off tonight at the 2010 Chapman Swifts Prom at the Tiffany Center. All proceeds directly benefit the school.

Family

Although I'll spare my family by omitting photos from the blog, we had a great mini-reunion over food and wine. I got to meet my brand new baby cousin and see how my other small cousins have grown. Family is the most important aspect in my life, and I'm happy that we were able to make it back East to see everyone. We were treated to a feast, and I hope someday we can do the same for them.

Glimpse & Gander: Maharam Design Studio

Our fabulous local Maharam rep, Richelle, hooked us up with an amazing tour of the Maharam Design Studio, located on 5th Ave., just steps from Union Square. We were so impressed with the kind atmosphere and inspiring projects they have in process...and I know exactly what fabric I'm going to use on my next cafe project.

We were surprised by the intimate size of the design team, and that such sweeping projects and new product offerings came from such a tight group. Maharam does partner with some of the most cutting edge folks around: Hella Jongerius, Bruce Mau, and Paul Smith to name a few, and they're new products really show a commitment to innovation.

Maharam is a fourth-generation, family run business. The office is light, bright, and airy (any creative's dream!). The head honcho's office is out in the open, with a library fit for a design king. In fact, anyone in the office is welcome to borrow his books. He also has a nice collection of bikes I would have liked to take out for a spin.

Textile Sneak Peeks

No Birthday is complete without a chocolate cake. We stumbled upon Little Cupcake Bakeshop while walking the streets of soho. While I think the Americana trend is a little overdone and overused (we saw it just about everywhere we turned) the place was very cute and warm. The cake itself was incredible: moist, with just the right amount of sweetness.

The classic carrera marble cafe table with iron base will always be my favorite. It serves as the perfect backdrop for baked goods.

Later that night, my friend Sarah brought me a bounty of yummy cupcakes from Billy's, her favorite bake shop. Their pumpkin spice is amazing! We also celebrated with a Belgian Beer toast and lots of frites.

Hunt & Gather: The Brooklyn Flea

I somehow managed to completely skip over Saturday in my trip diary, a day that was actually quite eventful and fun. We journeyed over to Fort Greene, Brooklyn to check out the Brooklyn Flea, a highly recommended stop by many of our friends, including Casey over at KID Collective, who happened to be arriving in the city the day we left! Be sure to check out NYC through her lens over at her blog.

I love the pattern play the trees created on these old Brownstones. We both felt that if we were to move to Brooklyn, this felt like a very comfortable neighborhood that reminded us of home.

Portland is seriously lacking in the Flea Market arena, so it was with great anticipation that we dug through each vendor's collection. You can learn a lot at a place like this- a cooling table is not for sunbathing, for example. I'm only on season two of Six Feet Under, so you'll have to cut me a break. We agreed before we entered that we could only purchase items that could fit in our suitcase, unless we encountered the deal of the century. The Fritz Hansen table we so desperately wanted to take home was overpriced, and we really couldn't justify shipping an industrial table home. So, we ended up with a few lightweight souvenirs from our trip:

Fig Studio Fact: I collect tea towels. I have a towel from every trip I've been on in the past 5 years. My husband has managed cut holes in nearly all of them, but they are still special to me and every time I hang my towels it's a reminder of my love for travel. This 2011 Buy Local Calendar towel is by the talented Claudia Pearson- you can make your purchase in her Etsy store.

We collected enough vintage press letters to spell Guggenheim, now we need to figure out how we want to display them in our home. Perhaps mounted on a beautiful wallpaper sample or in on of our terrariums?

My birthday fell on a Monday and the one stop that I could not miss wasn't going to be open for us to celebrate, so we were sure to hit it up Saturday. The Red Hook Lobster Pound. I'm pretty much obsessed with seafood, and lobsters aren't exactly an Oregon specialty. I wanted to try Maine fresh lobster, whole, with all the juices. We weren't disappointed! Full flavor with all of the trimmings.

Secret find: The new Brooklyn Ikea has a free ferry on weekends. Red Hook to Pier 17 in 20 minutes flat. What a deal, and what a view!

The best cure for jet lag is to hit the ground running and never look back. Our first NYC destination has been on our must-see list for a while, as Phase 1 was still under construction during our last visit in '08. The Highline phase 1 is a 9-block long elevated public park offering sweeping views of Chelsea and the Hudson. The design reveals a true nod to the structure's past role as a freight rail line, and has preserved what could have been a true loss to the city. This is one of the best examples of adaptive re-use I've seen, and I hope it serves as a model for other cities facing industrial change.

Nature softens industrial remnants and modern interventions

The success of this project is magnified by the sheer number of people using the space. It's a beautiful, safe place that allows users a respite from the concrete jungle below. Many used the reclining lounges to finish up work on their laptops, while others were simply taking the opportunity to bask in November's mild warmth.

After spending almost an hour in the park, we headed down to the Chelsea Market to pickup some Oregon wine from the Wine Vault (a favorite I discovered while studying at Parson's) and grab a quick bite at the market's crepe stand. We made our way back to our home base for the week and relished in the fact that we still had six days left to explore and eat our way through the city.

Cover Your Walls

After two weekends of wallpaper hanging for this project, I've got wallcoverings on the brain... and stuck to my hands and painter's jeans. I'm really loving the graphic qualities in many of the new prints out there, and I particularly admire the collection from Oh Joy! for Hygge & West. Stone's Throw Away allows the viewer to complete the story, to see beyond the lines and interpret the pattern. As a side bonus, this print may help hide wall imperfections in older homes, where other wallcoverings can actually enhance blemishes.

My other favorite is out of Madison and Grow's Pasadena collection. I have this spec'd on a current project so I'll have some beautiful installation shots to share by Spring 2012.

Angles: Erica Wakerly for Hermitage has been around for a while but I'm still waiting to see a smashing installation. I keep this one tucked into my back pocket for just the right client and space.

Working in my studio among the roaring sounds of heavy machinery from dawn to dusk, I struggle and search for form amidst the sawdust and cuttings. I scream to the mountains and only hear myself in return as my voice rocks of the night-black wall of trees and petrified sediment that are the brook’s banks. I look at my fingers, cracked, splitting, chipped and bleeding, much like the wood that yields to them. Each piece of wood is unique—like a person—a masterpiece of character. Every day I discover something extraordinary about each piece. Sometimes it leads to disappointment, but this only encourages me to continue searching.

Fig is always looking for objects with soul. When you learn to look beyond the surface, you'll see how that wood bends, how that joint stays together, and how that piece ended up in your living room.

Pale Palette :: Powder Room

Once a laminate-laden and wallpaper covered child's bathroom, Fig Studio brought this small space to a new level of sophistication using a restrained palette and environmentally conscious materials. Refinishing existing well-functioning cabinets and choosing a beautiful limestone remnant from a larger kitchen remodel helped extend the client's modest budget without sacrificing high-level style. The pale color scheme gave an instant visual boost to the windowless space while the vertically striped cotton shower curtain helped extend the room's limited volume. We're proud of the finish product on this project and it really goes to show you that a you can get first-class results on a petite budget.

Pendleton Luminaire

A few months back, Fig Studio was asked to join over thirty artists and architects in designing a luminaire for the first annual Illumination Auction benefiting the Lions Club International Foundation. A dozen napkin sketches and a Sketchup model later, the Luminaire was born from a bin of vintage Pendleton Woolen Mills bobbins.

I've seen these bobbins on a number of occasions (frequent trips to the Pendleton Woolen Mills Store is really part of a Portlander's job description, right?) and purchased a few for home use... candlesticks, basket fillers, and general Northwest modern accessorizing. A lightbulb went off while working on the cafe project, but I didn't have the time to prototype or get these to a place where they'd be suitable in a commercial environment. When the Illumination opportunity arose, somehow I managed to veer away from this idea I'd been hanging on to for months. I conceptualized all of these complicated options, none of which could be handbuilt in a reasonable amount of time.

Maybe I didn't want to share. Maybe I wanted to be cutting edge and super clean lined. Whatever the reason, it took my husband's encouragement to get me in to Hippo Hardware and get cracking. Eight hours and ten sore fingers later, the Pendleton Luminaire was finished. I was a little sad to part with it, but I knew it was going to a good cause and would hopefully help give the Lions extra resources in their charitable efforts. I have a feeling number two in the series will be my next rainy day project.

Fritz Studio :: Giulietti/Schouten Architects

Last weekend was filled with wonderful design events, including the Portland Center for Architecture's AIA home tour (I was a docent at the King residence), the Lions Club Illumination Auction (more details to follow), and the grand opening party for Kristin Fritz's artist studio designed by Giulietti/Schouten Architects. I've been watching this project take shape over the course of the last few months and was very excited to see the design come to life.

Located in what was essentially an unusable area of Kristin's backyard, the studio gently responds to the existing home and landscape. In fact, the architects designed the footprint to avoid the removal of any trees.

The large sliding glass doors create a flexible space and were perfect for this party, allowing guests to easily meander in and out.

I love how flexible this space can be- parties, long-term guests, or simply a gallery. It's proven to be a huge asset to the existing home and I'm going to tuck this idea away for my future dream house. One can dream, right?

Glimpse & Gander: Garibaldi Charters

We began the day gently motoring through the Garibaldi harbor, admiring the weather-worn crafts surrounded in fog. The water was deceptively calm and the light wind surprisingly warm-- I momentarily felt like I was on a set of a teenage slasher flick. As we entered the jetty we all realized we were in for a wild ride: small craft advisory has a whole new meaning after this trip. We watched the Coast Guard escort being tossed around like a play-toy and the waves slamming into the shoreline rocks. Captain Mick confidently guided us out past the bar and assured us we were all going to live to tell the tale. The sun quickly rose to reveal a perfect Oregon Coast day, and an ideal trip to celebrate my architect-husband's 30th birthday.

I've never had the chance to view the vast Oregon coastline from the Ocean's perspective. We are so lucky that we don't have high-rise hotels and condos blocking the majestic view. We saw the Cape Mears lighthouse, Oceanside, and Manzanita during our 6-hour tour. Check out KID Collective's perspective here and Scott & Heather's here.

The crew at Garibaldi Charters gave us a great adventure and memories for a lifetime. Some of us are a little worse for wear in this photo, but we're all glad we can add this to our list of life's accomplishments. We cooked up some of our catch that night- Ocean to plate in 6 hours is an incredible luxury I hope we never see come to an end.

My trusty Toms took me all over the Oregon Coast this summer: up dunes, across tide pools, and between crusty barnacles. The Northwest coast is all about texture, both visual and physical, with a heaping dose of truthful beauty. Thanks to the '67 beach bill, we're lucky to have public beaches welcoming all walks of life, including beautifully bright orange starfish and designers like me. My next trip to the coast includes a chartered fishing trip, where I plan to soak up the rain, try my hand at ocean fishing, and catch my limit in tasty Dungeness Crabs. Until then, I have a mass of project details to develop, a furniture package ready to fill a townhome, and several finished projects to document. Cheers to the weekend!

Weekend Escape

I can't seem to go anywhere without analyzing the space around me, the texture of materials I come in contact with, or the quality of balance in a room. Good interior designers are always working, always learning, and always seeing what others overlook. I'm allowing an escape this weekend: tucking my projects into the back of my mind until Tuesday morning when I greet them with a renewed vigor. Some much needed outdoor adventure is planned, a couple of movies from my archive, and the start of a new running plan designed by Mr. Guggenheim.

Glimpse & Gander: Heath Sausalito

Anyone with an ounce of love for Heath Ceramics knows that you can't complete a trip to San Francisco without taking a detour to beautiful Sausilito and the historic Heath factory. Though my schedule didn't align with the weekend factory tour, I managed a peek into the production room and saw the craftspeople hard at work, perfecting their beautifully simple products. The mug that holds my morning Oolong was made by hand in that room! How great is that? I love that this place is so easygoing and freespirited. I love that their signage isn't made from fancy materials and that they've maintained such an approachable facade. I'm committed to Heath for life and look forward to passing my collection down to the next generation of Guggenheims.

When Summer acts like Spring and Fall

Portland's summer sun has been less than stellar this year, but I think it's fitting as Fig's never been busier and harder at work! The cafe is currently in the bidding and permit process, the Rose kitchen remodel is in it's final phase, we have a new Alphabet District townhome remodel on the boards, and three master baths under construction.

Though I had the best of intentions with my new posting schedule, I'm going to have to give myself some breathing room and post when I'm able. I'd love to call myself Wonder Woman, but alas, I'm only a designer. Be sure to give us a shout if you have any posting requests!

I did manage a short trip to San Francisco to visit the SFDC to catch up on the latest in furnishings as well as a jaunt over to Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Though a bit gaudy for my taste, I will admit that it's quite an incredible place. Julia Morgan is a hero in my book.

Sea glass has long been the source for my favorite calming color schemes. The soft-focus quality rarely dissapoints and easily pairs with neutrals and brights to allow for a flexible palette. I particularly love when it's applied to modern and simplified furniture and objects, as seen here on the iconic Eames armchair and Tom Dixon's contemporary glass pendant.

Hunt & Gather: Ofuro Inspired Tubs

Space planning a compact room is almost always challenging, particularly when you're designing a new space for an older home with little opportunity to expand. Fig Studio is currently working on rehabbing an existing bathroom in a 1920's bungalow situated on Grant Park in NE Portland. Floor space is at a premium, but it is important for the client to have the option to bathe and soak. The solution? A Japanese Ofuro inspired soaking tub. It offers the bather full immersion, without requiring the floor space of a traditional tub. This style of bathing, in fact, will allow the user to comfortably sit and read while relaxing the muscles in the back and shoulders and releasing the traditional pressure points experienced when bathing in a standard tub.

Employing creative solutions is the key to success on a challenging project. We strive to abandon standard school of thought when faced with an unusual space, complex programming, or small footprints. One-size-fits all doesn't apply to interior design, it's all about adapting new solutions for individual clients.

Glimpse & Gander: Lan Su Chinese Gardens

My last trip to Portland's Lan Su Gardens doubled as a Mothers Day outing and project research. I am proud to be designing a new master suite for my mom, and finally giving serious payback for all her support during my time in architecture school. The project is close to my heart as she still lives in my childhood home outside of Portland. Though we would have loved to fly to China for inspiration, the Lan Su Gardens were designed and built to closely replicate structures and landscaping found in Suzhou, China (Portland's sister city) so it made for the perfect local substitute.

My mom has a sincere connection with Chinese motifs and design principles, so we knew this was the right place to start. We studied patterns, the connections between space and view, and prominent materials. Using this information, I've adapted a design that fits within the context of her Northwest home, the budget, existing furnishings, and practical use. Cascade Contracting is helping see this project to reality, so when we're all finished I'll be sure to post the finished product.

I'm planning a getaway to Boston this summer for a friend's wedding and stumbled upon the new Ames hotel. Housed within an 1889 Romanesque-style structure, this historic property recently received a full renovation by the hotelier's in-house design team in partnership with the Rockwell Group.

Minimal white on grey standard guestrooms allow for relaxation after a day of heavy historical sightseeing and bountiful Italian cuisine, while the dramatic lobby art suggests a whimsical hello. Suites are styled to glamorous Hollywood standards rather than historic revival, and I particularly like the hint of lavender creeping into the grey tones they've used throughout the property. Now I'm on the hunt for the perfect lobstah dish. Any suggestions?

Work for the Rested

Mexico was beyond amazing, but it seems reality at my desk, in my inbox, and on jobsites already has my mind far far away from white sand beaches and frosty margaritas. Posting will be light to none this week due to exciting project progress with several great clients. I see there was a blip last week with our color post- I will get that fixed soon for you all!

Tomorrow is extra special as I get to spend some time with Lisa Warninger (the talent behind Urban Weeds and some seriously beautiful fashion photography). Some good marketing headshots are finally in order and I am happy to have Lisa on board for this project.
